Azotemic renal osteodystrophy; clinical features and bone pathology.
During the hemodialysis treatment of 543 uremic patients for 10 years, significant complications concerning metabolic calcium disturbances, subperiosteal resorption, calcification of soft tissue or peripheral vessels, and fractures were noted. Significant elevation of alkaline phosphatase was induced for 5 years under hemodialysis using 5.0--6.0 mg/dl dialysate calcium, but not under 7.5 mg/dl ...
متن کاملRenal osteodystrophy.
The incidence of chronic renal disease is increasing, and the pattern of renal osteodystrophy seems to be shifting from the classic hyperparathyroid presentation to one of low bone turnover. Patients with persistent disease also live longer than previously and are more physically active. Thus, patients may experience trauma as a direct result of increased physical activity in a setting of weake...
متن کامل[Renal osteodystrophy and secondary hyperparathyroidism].
High-turnover bone due to excess PTH is one of the main types of renal osteodystrophy. In addition to the classic stimuli of PTH secretion such as hypocalcemia and decreased production of active vitamin D, new mechanisms has been suggested. Furthermore, skeletal resistance to PTH, a classic stimulus of PTH secretion in uremia, has been recently revisited as an underlying abnormality.
متن کاملSlipped epiphyses in renal osteodystrophy.
Clinical, biochemical, roentgenological, and histological features of slipped epiphyses (epiphysiolysis) in 11 out of 112 children with renal osteodystrophy have been analysed. Characteristic age-related patterns of involvement of different epiphyses are described. Quantitative measurements of iliac bone histology, serum parathyroid hormone levels, and clinical history show the presence of more...
